Marcelo, Ronaldo and memories of glory with Real Madrid

Those memories of Marcelo are shared on The Players Tribune.

When I think about the finals, there are beautiful movies playing in my mind. But the images are rewinded from the end to the beginning of the story.

I can not breath. I tried not to panic. This happened in the dressing room right before the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2018. I felt like something was stuck in my chest. The pressure is terrible. Do you know that feeling?

A little bit of anxiety is normal in football. I don’t care who you are, if you don’t feel nervous before the final you’re not human. You are just trying not to splash your pants. That is the truth, man.

For me, the pressure was heavy before the final against Liverpool. Perhaps many people will think that strange. We have won 2 consecutive championships. And everyone wants Liverpool to be the champion. So what’s the problem?

A few days before the final, a former Real Madrid player said something about me on TV and made me heavy in my head. When asked what he thought of the final, he said, “I think Marcelo should buy a poster of Mohamed Salah, stick it on the wall and pray every night.”

After 12 years of playing and winning 3 Champions League titles, he didn’t respect me like that on live broadcast. That comment was meant to engulf me. But it gave me lots of motivation.

When I walked out into the yard, I was still having difficulty breathing and I thought that if I had to die here tonight, I vow to “dry up”. I cannot say much about the match.

I only remember 2 things that exist very vividly. With about 20 minutes remaining, when we were leading 2-1, the ball went all the way across the line meaning a corner. I thought to myself, “A poster of Mohamed Salah stuck on the wall? Thank you, bro. Thanks for the momentum. ”
